OSCARS!

Oscar Sunday! Daryl and I went to Maurissa's to watch the Oscars. She TIVOed it so we got to see it all speeding thru the commercials and boringness. We had a small pool of 4 when Josh came by and let me tell you it was very, very close. I won! So for the past two months I've actually made $3. Yay me! While I liked CRASH, I didn't think it was all that great but, whatever. I never saw BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK, and SYRIANA, so I can't really say which was best. I did see PRETTY PERSUASION and JUNEBUG. PRETTY PERSUASION is good and it's a little scary that Evan Rachel Wood is so evil in it because I think she's like 17! She plays a girl called Kimberly Joyce who convinces two other teenage girls in accusing their literature professor/drama coach of racism and sexual impropriety. A TV reporter gets into the mix and after various sexual manipulations and silly courtroom behavior--the truth comes out. And then it gets even worse. It's a fun movie in the HEATHERS, and MEAN GIRLS trend but it might be a bit too heartless in the end. Kimberly says, "It's like the world is this orchestra and I'm the conductor." And she's completely right. And then we saw JUNEBUG which was really slow but very, very good. Amy Adams was soooo good she definitely deserved the nomination. I urge everyone to go see it just for her performance alone. I even voted for her to win in my Oscar ballot. JUNEBUG is the story of a Southern family and what happens when one of the sons comes back to his family home with his new wife--after not having visited for three years. There are some seriously funny moments and seriously sad ones and it was just a really, really good movie. No one explodes or gets shot or gymnastically fights off evildoers, but it just so well acted, you feel as if you could go down there and meet these people. Beware. It's slow in the beginning, but it'll pick up.
