Chinese New Year Parade

Saturday, February 24th - Chinese New Year Parade. It's the Year of the Pig. Isn't this cute? Daryl and I bought it in Chinatown after the parade. We forgot the camera, but we got to see Archie Kao and James Hong, along with a number of politicians. The mayor actually used his microphone to complain about the potholes in the road along the parade route. And our friend Christian got a photo of the gigantic gold pig that he was hoping for. I'm happy with this paper representation.

Goodbyes, Pipes, Wrestlers, and Chinese New Year

Saturday, February 10th - It was a sad day for Doctor Who fans in Southern California, our fellow fan, denara, is moving north ("Lots of places have a North.") So we got together to say goodbye and watch some Torchwood. Goodbye, denara.

Thursday, February 15th - Today we celebrated Valentine's day and I told Daryl he had to spend the entire day with me and he wasn't allowed to work. I finally, finally got him to go see the Magritte exhibit at the LACMA. It's a fantastic exhibit and I recommend it to everyone. They had clouds on the floor and pictures of the LA freeway on the ceiling. The exhibit included various other pieces of art from people who were inspired by Magritte. There was a Jeff Koons sculpture of a little inflatable rowboat that was completely made of lead. Daryl was delighted when he saw it because he had the exact same kind of little rowboat when he was a kid. We also poked around a lot of the other exhibits including one on Picasso. It included a video of Picasso painting a picture. Oddly enough, it was really funny. He started painting a flower, which turned into a fish, then a human face, ending with a rooster. There's a lot of tension, too, because they keep reminding him that they're going to run out of film and he seems fine while they count down. And he finishes in time!

Then we had a quick dinner and then we carpooled to Lucha VaVoom! Mexican wrestlers and burlesque dancers are perfect entertainment for Valentine's. Here are our friends, Christian, Nanette, (who is very pregnant, by the way) and Aaron.

Sunday, February 18th - Happy New Year! It's Chinese New Year today and we got to see an old friend and meet some new ones. I couldn't arrange a meeting that involved any kind of celebration for that, but I did arrange to meet up at a Thai restaurant that had a Thai Elvis impersonator and a Thai folk singer. Hats off to Palms Thai!
